01.04.08 Star Trek to get sequel

Paramount pictures have announced that they are planning a sequel to the reboot of Star Trek, which hits cinemas worldwide on May 7th.

Variety reports that writers Robert Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have been asked to deliver a script by Christmas this year, with a view to releasing the second film in the summer of 2011.

Lindelof told Variety; "There's obviously a lot of hubris involved in signing on to write a sequel of a movie that hasn't even come out yet, but we're so excited about the first one that we wanted to proceed."

"With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things. We'll be ambitious about what we'll do."

Zachary has signed for three Star Trek films, which would see him possibly working on the project until 2013.

07.02.09 Zachary at Ojai Charity Auction

A report from the Ojai Plays Gala Charity Auction.

Likewise, money was the theme around which conference artistic director Robert Egan organized the show, a collection of play excerpts read by an all-star cast that included Van Dyke, Dana Delany of “Desperate Housewives” and Zachary Quinto, who is Mr. Spock in the “Star Trek” film due in theaters in May.

And raising a nice little pile of it was the reason for a post-show auction — at the nearby St. Thomas Aquinas Parish hall — that had Quinto flashing Spock’s split-fingered salute at the audience.

He did so in an effort to get the bidding going on a package that included a visit to the set of his NBC show, “Heroes.” Bidding had stalled at $750 when someone shouted out the suggestion that he sweeten the deal with tickets to the “Star Trek” premiere. Quinto hesitated, blushed furiously, acquiesced and then watched in amazement as the bidding raced to $4,000....

...Enter Quinto as the third friend. Playing devil’s advocate, he asks Weber’s character if the artist who created the painting is “fashionable.”

Then, sounding a lot like Spock, he adds that, in the world of contemporary art, such a question is “logical.”

Quite.

Whilst at the event Zachary accepted Neil Patrick Harris's invitation to present an award at the American Magic Association awards in March.

20.01.09 Big 'Fugitives' reveals in TV Guide

Warning! Spoilers Throughout!

American listings magazine TV Guide has published a raft of new information about the next episodes of Heroes, including an interview with Zach. They confirm that a major character will die in an early episode, and that a plane carrying the 'fugitive' heroes will crash, but that some will escape and go on the run.

The magazine tells how Sylar will team up with a relentless 'Hunter' hired by Nathan, after originally being his target.  It also reveals that Sylar will meet his father, a taxidermist named Mr Gray : "Their meeting is distinctly different from what Sylar expects. It's very disappointing for him and sends him off on a cunning, very manipulative pursuit of power" says Zachary.

We've seen the pictures of Sylar and new character Luke played by Dan Byrd. "It's as if Jeffrey Dahmer had an apprentice" says creator Tim Kring. "They go on a cross-country road trip, stopping at diners and eating pie. It's very Route 66."

Zach adds, "We're back to the storytelling of Season One, less flying around and more human connection. There's no more of that emotional whiplash, who's good, who's bad - that we have in 'Villains'. The audience will really root for the characters again. It feels like we're back on an heroic journey."

15.12.08 Star Trek To Be Screened In IMAX

Paramount Pictures and IMAX Corporation today announced that Star Trek will be simultaneously released to both IMAX and conventional theatres worldwide on May 8, 2009.

Star Trek, which chronicles the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow USS Enterprise crew members, will be digitally re-mastered into IMAX. Paramount Pictures will be the exclusive distributor of the film to IMAX theatres worldwide.

“We’re excited to share the enhanced IMAX version of this film with the millions of dedicated fans who have been anticipating this release since production began,” said Rob Moore, Vice Chairman, Paramount Pictures. “The IMAX Experience adds that extra level of excitement to an already action-packed film, giving moviegoers a premium ‘event’ at the multiplex.”

Added J.J. Abrams, “I’m thrilled that audiences will be able to experience this new, epic world of Star Trek – with an incredible cast and mind-blowing visual effects – on what is, obviously, the most remarkable film format in the world.”

"Star Trek combines top Hollywood story-telling talent with space exploration, and each is very conducive to The IMAX Experience,” said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. “Expanding our relationship with Paramount Pictures to include this film strengthens our 2009 slate, and with the continuing rollout of digital IMAX theatre systems, we will be able to offer the fan-base more locations to experience the epic first journey of the USS Enterprise in the most immersive way.”

“Both Star Trek and IMAX have taken audiences to far away places they would normally not be able to go, and in this case, it’s space – the final frontier,” added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “J.J. Abrams has created a powerful movie that has fans worldwide feverishly anticipating its release. We are thrilled to partner with Paramount Pictures to bring J.J.’S exciting vision of this incredible space adventure to IMAX screens.”

12.11.08 Description of trailer and scenes for Trek XI

Den of Geek have released this description of the two scenes from the new Star Trek movie in which Zach will play Mr Spock.

THE SECOND SCENE: An ill Kirk tries to warn Pike of danger
Abrams prefaced this scene by informing us that - after the preceding scene - Kirk continues to get into trouble after his enrolment in Starfleet, and that when all the other graduates have been assigned starships, he is assigned none. Kirk's friend Doctor McCoy (Karl Urban, who REALLY nails DeForest Kelley's voice and mannerisms) manages to get him on board Pike's first run with the Enterprise by invoking Federation Rule 691, which states that a doctor can bring on board any person who he deems to be in need of treatment. In order to qualify Kirk for this loophole, McCoy gives him a nasty but non-lethal virus.

As we join the scene, Kirk's looking pretty ill as McCoy drags him over to a bed in a very spacious and cool-looking sick-bay. McCoy gives Kirk something to allay the effects of the virus, but Kirk has an allergic reaction to it and his hands swell up like Mickey Mouse's.

Over on the bridge, Pavel Chekov (Anton Yelchin) tries to log on with voice-identification, but the Enterprise computer won't let him until he can pronounce his V's properly.

Chekov announces to the crew that there is a catastrophic electrical storm on Vulcan, and that the Enterprise is running to the rescue. But Kirk recognises the description of the storm as identical to a Romulan attack that took place at the time of his birth, and is determined to warn Captain Pike that he is warping into a terrible trap.

Kirk tracks down Uhura, not yet a fixture on the bridge, and tries to convince her to help him, but then the virus/palliative causes his tongue to stop working! McCoy eventually manages to stabilise him so that he can talk to Pike.

Confronting Pike with the information on the bridge, a very disapproving Spock tries to have the brash young graduate taken off by security, but Kirk is able to persuade both Spock and his captain of the danger they're in.

Dropping out of warp-speed, the Enterprise instantly finds itself navigating the hulks and wrecks of the aftermath of a huge space-battle. This is no natural phenomena…

THE THIRD SCENE: Meeting Nimoy's Spock and Pegg's Mr. Scott
Abrams prefaced this scene by explaining that Kirk's continuing impulsiveness has forced Spock - now in command of the Enterprise - to exile him temporarily on an unnamed location. Here Kirk is met by...Spock! This time it's Leonard Nimoy, who has been aged even beyond his 77 years to play a Spock that has travelled back in time to change the course of history.

As we join the scene, Nimoy's Spock is leading Pine's Kirk to meet Pegg's Mr. Scott, who has been similarly exiled, and is in belligerent mood. Scott has a big scene here, talking with some annoyance about his efforts to effect matter transference onto a ship that is travelling at warp-speed. This is something Kirk and Scotty need to know if they are going to use Spock's handy transporter terminal to get back into the action.

Nimoy informs Scott that his future self will solve the problem of 'beaming up' between speeding ships, and even shows him the formula he is destined to work out. The engineer declares (against the evidence). "Of course! I never would have thought of space as a moving force!".

Old Spock informs Kirk that he will need to get Young Spock's command revoked with the old 'unfit for command' ruse we have so often seen in Star Trek, and that he should do this by getting Young Spock emotionally off-balance. Old Spock declares that it will not be difficult, and that he himself is like that (suggesting that Spock has seen himself in this way his whole life).

As Kirk and Scotty get into the transporter, Kirk playfully accuses Old Spock of cheating by travelling back in time to change the course of events. "I learnt it from a master", Spock rejoins. Ouch.

31.10.08  Transcript of Empire's interview with Zach

Trekkers/Trekkies! If you’ve had doubts that Mr Spock is safe in the hands of Zachary Quinto – Heroes’ Evil Sylar – allow Empire to blow them away with an illustrative anecdote.

We’re mid-cover shoot with Quinto and Chris Pine in Culver City, Los Angeles. With his blue Starfleet uniform, Beatles fringe and pointy ears, there’s no doubt that the 31 year-old actor has Spock’s appearance down pat. But what about the core of the Enterprise’s inscrutable Vulcan science officer? Well, during one set-up, our photographer asks Quinto to lean casually up against a pillar. Quinto pauses, then points to Pine-as-Kirk. “He would lean,” he says. “I wouldn’t. Spock wouldn’t lean.” Mr Spock in a nutshell.

“It didn’t make sense,” laughs Quinto a week later. It’s hardly surprising Quinto is so adept at Spockery, after all he publicly lobbied hard for the role. “I really relate to the duality of his perspective,” he admits. “I think all the things that Spock is known for – the logic versus the emotion, the human versus the alien – are at the core of his journey in this film. I think he’s less refined in his capacity to deal with them.”

Appropriately Quinto’s answers are intelligent, logical and – JJ Abrams will love this – designed not to give away a shred of detail about the film itself. “Come on now!” he laughs when pressed on the matter of a Vulcan mind-meld  “You’re hurling eggs at a moving target!” But move him away from plot specifics and the human half of Quinto wins. No, he’s never sung Nimoy’s seminal single The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. “But I’d like to! It might pop up on Youtube some day…” Spock would win in a fight with Sylar. “Spock would find a way to get through to Sylar and disengage him.” And his new internet handle shouldn’t be Sylock or Spocklar but…”Spork! If Chris and I had to psyche each other before a take we had an elaborate high five sequence that ended with the chant “Spork!” laughs Quinto. “Very Three Amigos.”

Hang on. Spock doing a Three Amigos style salute? Maybe he’s not in safe hands after all…
